Vietnam is a country filled
with lush mountains and abundant free-flowing
rivers. Vietnamese people depend on their rivers
for many aspects of their livelihoods, including
for fisheries, agriculture and transportation.
About 80 percent of the population derives their
livelihood from agriculture, forestry and
fisheries, which are in turn dependent on
healthy, free-flowing rivers. Rivers
provide water for irrigation, rich alluvial land
in the riverine deltas and nutrition for the
people of Vietnam. Unfortunately, many
development projects and unplanned exploitation
have threatened the integrity of the Vietnam
riverine ecosystem in particular and the water
resources in general. Therefore, it is very
important to raise people’s awareness on the
importance of this issue and promote more
rational use of the water resource in the
country.
The Center for Water
Resources Conservation and Development
is a non profit organization whose goal is to
promote the sustainable use of Vietnam’s water
resources. We work to improve the livelihoods of
disadvantaged and river-dependant communities,
encourage sustainable river use, and expose
harmful development projects such as poorly
planned dams. WARECOD was established in 2006.
